Santeros (voodoo to you) use the Catholic saints as a cover for their worship of the old Yoruba gods and goddesses. Saint Barbara, for instance, stands in for Chango, god of fire.
The blurb seems to suggest that what you see in its outer form here is not what the Hierophant card is actually all about, in much the same way.
