I was also raised Catholic and went to a Catholic school. At home, we prayed the rosary, which by the way, consists mostly of repetitions of the Hail Mary.

Also, there are many appearance by Mary, like Lourdes. Many miracles are ascribed to her. I never thought of her as a passive vessel. She seemed quite active.
