(I know I'm necro-ing this post a bit, but it's still on the first page at least! )
I think since that the right-wing has vocally co-opted Christianity as theirs, the rest of us have either remained too silent or have unfortunately given up on their faith altogether, possibly due to believing the right-wing versions of hate and hypocrisy. Those of us who believe in the biblical Jesus, the one who commands us You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself. The Jesus who is a CHAMPION for the poor and the sick.
We need to speak up and be vocal too! To speak up and speak out AS CHRISTIANS that we do not partake in heresies of hatred and oppression in the name of Jesus. That Jesus isn't about "boot straps, earning and being deserving, U.S.A., America first, capitalism, guns, abortion, homosexuality, Ayn Rand, Objectivism, Republican, conservative, etc."
God doesn't give us his grace and salvation because we've earned it or because we deserve it, so we do not need to require such things from others before we give them our help. We were created in God's image, and a part of following Jesus is being like Jesus and following in his footsteps.
But if people only witness the right-wing perversions, then that's what they will come to believe is the truth of all Christianity when it couldn't be further from the truth.
As Reverend Barber has stated in a speech I heard not too long ago, we need a moral revolution in this country.
"No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house." Matthew 5:15
Let's stop hiding under the bushel basket.
