1. Back in the 1940s or 1950s, when much of radio was live

A radio station’s program was slated to present a segment of music by Les Brown’s Orchestra. Before the day’s programming was finalized, however, it was decided to have a Yom Kippur program instead. Les Brown’s name was scratched out, and Yom Kippur was written in where LesBrown’s name had been scratched out. But the announcer that was to introduce the program came on much later, and only read what had been left for him to read. And so, the public was made aware of: “and now, the dance music of Yom Kippur’s orchestra!”

My dad was a beginning journalist back then, and he saved me a copy of that announcement, along with some other famous on-air gaffes of the day.
