I doubt you'd ever ban "guns" however they were defined. Over time, new weapons would simply replace guns.

I still think the best answer is to keep people who are unstable, young, or criminal from easily possessing weapons (including guns), hand grenades, or anything to be created in the future.

We take a vision test in order to drive! Driving has an age limit and learners permit. Not a perfect system, but it probably helps. Why not an interview and examination and personal review to begin the gun possession process?

If society wants to protect others from irrational, impulsive, and criminal acts like shootings, then simply have a serious and appropriate license in order to buy, possess, or use weapons like guns. It won't keep folks from faking licenses, etc., but it would prevent much of the easily avoidable violence.
