I am a regular reader of The Mary Sue and they don't shy away from smacking down sexist act/remarks even when it comes from an "ally". Which happens, we all are not perfect, and if you have had to wade through some of the vicious unwarranted criticism to get to the thin slices of constructive criticism, you can wind up losing your temper and saying something stupid.

To me, this was the one "take away" from the story:

“I’ve said before, when you declare yourself politically, you destroy yourself artistically,” he said. “Because suddenly that’s the litmus test for everything you do."
