of Grace Hopper pulling her little red wagon loaded with boxes of punch cards down the halls of the Pentagon. All us old-fashioned COBOL programmers idolized her.

But, don't forget that before her was the author of the very first programming manual ever, and the first recorded instance of a programming algorithm: Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace. (1815-1852)

...chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage's early mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. Her notes on the engine include what is recognised as the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a machine. Because of this, she is often regarded as the first computer programmer.
