1. Not really surprising. If I were a woman nowadays, I'd definitely carry bear spray or something when walking alone.

If I'm out walking/hiking at night and see a woman approaching, I'll walk out in the street just to let them know I'm not a threat.

I hope it will change someday, but I bet it's been this way since prehistoric times.
