The data tends to support your third point, but the first two don't really pan out. There are any number of sources keeping tabs on the fallout (ouch) from the disaster, from government to universities to well-intentioned bloggers and such. If a person wants to know about the impact of the meltdown, he or she can find relatively unbiased sources as well as people screaming in panicked ignorance.

As far as the magnitude of the problem, it seems to be pretty clear, with actual experts weighing in. The world will have to deal with the consequences for generations. The problem is there are numerous Chicken Littles running around convinced that Fukushima is going to sterilize the Pacific Ocean, cause mutations in California and precipitate the end of life on the planet.

The data simply does not support that level of response.
