Born in wake of 9/11, Interfaith Prayer service thrives in Eugene - Islamic prayers, Hindu stories and Sikh prayers echoed off the vast dome of the First Christian Church down onto the audience peacefully absorbing the presentations. The quiet crowd of 160 was from all walks of life and faith traditions, young and old.
Created in response the events of 9/11, the Interfaith Prayer and Reflection services were intended to help the community heal and overcome any fear or intolerance of different faiths. It was expected to last three months.
Instead, almost 12 years later, the renamed Interfaith Prayer Service International (IPSI) just held its 138th service. Today it is an international non-profit organization, at the suggestion of UNESCO a few years ago.
