The Ohio GOP's strategy of defunding higher education has its first casualty, Hocking College [View all]

Massive layoffs of educators and staff have been announced for Hocking College. Hocking College was started to provide an affordable education to students in the Appalachian Region of Ohio.

Thanks to massive increases in tuition, bad management, switching from a quarter system to semesters and cut backs for state support of students have led to a huge loss of students at Hocking College. The State of Ohio has repeatedly failed to assist the college and its students. The college is set to have programs and its budget slashed to nearly unsustainable levels.

I expect to see the college to be sold to a corporate outfit soon as the Ohio GOP pays back its ALEC backers.

This is a disaster to our students who are trying to better themselves and get out of the cycle of poverty in this part of Ohio.
