(12,008 posts)If Bernie drops out now, it could just add to the feeling by some of his supporters that the process was stacked against him. A few days ago, I thought that if he dropped out of his own accord, it might avoid that, but that was before you had Carville and Clyburn go on TV and call for an end to the primaries when only half the country has had the chance to vote.
Additionally, it will help the Democrats build ground game and infrastructure that will help in November.
Also, several of the later states have special elections scheduled to coincide with the presidential primary. In New York, for example, Governor Cuomo scheduled five special elections, including to replace Republican Rep. Collins, who was convicted of insider trading, for the same day as the presidential primary. Republicans cried fowl, accusing him of doing that to increase Democratic turnout. https://www.wrvo.org/post/cuomo-sets-april-28-special-election-vacant-cny-senate-other-seats. In Wisconsin, there's an important judicial election scheduled the same day as the presidential primaries. If the presidential primaries are completely over Democratic turnout will be lower in those elections, which will only benefit Republicans.
