4. Heads up for No Kings protests on March 28

Since DOJ and DHS now lump No Kings protesters as Antifa, here are some tips for protesters to stay safe.

Protecting against tear gas (CS gas) requires covering all skin, protecting eyes with sealed goggles, and using a respirator with chemical filters (P100/N95 or gas mask). Avoid contact lenses, remove contaminated clothing immediately, and wash with cold water and soap to prevent chemical absorption. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
Protective Gear & Preparation

• Respiratory: Use a gas mask with appropriate filters (e.g., 40mm NATO) or a tightly sealed P100/N95 respirator.
• Eye Protection: Wear airtight, sealed goggles (e.g., swim or ski goggles) to prevent eye exposure.
• Clothing: Cover all skin with long sleeves, long pants, high socks, and a hat to cover hair. Consider layers.
• Skin Care: Do not apply oil-based sunscreens or makeup, as they can trap chemicals.
• Contact Lenses: Do not wear them; if exposed, remove them immediately. [3, 4, 6, 7, 8]

During Exposure

• Move Quickly: Move to higher ground, as tear gas is heavier than air and sinks.
• Breathe Shallowly: Breathe slowly to minimize inhalation.
• Protect Face: Use a bandana or mask. Do not rub eyes or skin. [5]

Decontamination

• Remove Clothes: Take off contaminated clothing immediately, ideally by cutting it off to avoid pulling it over your head.
• Bag Items: Place contaminated items in a sealed plastic bag. Wash them separately after at least 48 hours.
• Shower: Take a long, cold shower for at least 20 minutes to prevent the pores from opening, using soap for skin and water for eyes.
• Flush Eyes: Use water or saline solution to flush eyes thoroughly. [1, 5, 7, 9, 10]

Common Misconceptions

• Milk is not recommended for flushing eyes as it is not sterile.
• Bandanas alone offer very little protection; respirators are far more effective. [2, 9]
