1. The increasing level of violence is bad. It might presage worse.

Near the end of Thomas Mann’s Der Zauberberg, an increasing level of random violence sweeps over the tuberculosis sanatorium Berghof (in Davos), a microcosm and mirror of Europe as a whole. This ‘great excitability' Mann portrays is a sign of the horror to come. The last pages depict the plunging of Europe, from its high point of civilization, into the chaos of World War I.
