And when I had just turned 8, I went to Florida with my aunt, uncle and closest cousin to spend Easter vacation with my grandmother who was spending the winter there and my uncle stopped at a car wash in Georgia. The older couple who ran it was friendly to us kids, little blonde girls, gave us each a pen with the name of the car wash on it. But then I spotted the rest rooms - there was a pink door that said "Ladies," a blue door that said "Men," and a yellow door that said "Colored!" Obviously I'd never seen anything like that in my life, so I started to ask my aunt what that meant, but I could tell from her expression that I needed to shut up. And I never brought it up again.
