The idea that we should apologize (or deemphasize?) - education? - academics? - science? - intelligence? .... (global outlook?) In favor of some kind of striped down, dumbed down ... Lowest common denominator ... ?

Nope. I know there are people on this site that will argue (vociferously) for pretty much just that. But that's a hard pass for me.
