How did Graham win? Email from Bernie Sanders [View all]
Sisters and Brothers,
Donald Trumps move toward oligarchy and authoritarianism has created an unprecedented moment in modern American history -- one that has forced us to respond in an unprecedented way.
Status quo politics is not good enough. That is true when it comes to policy, and it is true when it comes to politics.
We need to elect candidates all over this country who have the guts not only to stand up to Trumpism, but to take on the monied interests of both parties and fight for a working class that has been ignored for far too long.
Graham Platner is one of those candidates.
Graham is a combat veteran and an oysterman who launched his campaign months ago with a promise to do something Democrats don't often do: give people something to vote for rather than just vote against.
He ran in a Democratic primary against a candidate few gave him a chance to defeat. He faced millions of dollars in negative ads from the Democratic establishment, and Republicans too.
Yesterday, after months of building a big lead because of tremendous grassroots support and enthusiasm in Maine and across the country, his opponent dropped out of the race.
But how did Graham win?
It's not complicated.
Graham Platner won because his campaign was centered on taking on oligarchy and fighting for the working people of Maine and the U.S.
Now he will face Susan Collins in the general election.
Not only is control of the United States Senate on the line in this race but, with Graham, we can elect a working class candidate who will join me in taking on the greed of the billionaires.
His race will be one of the closest and most expensive races in the country -- and it is one he cannot win alone. He needs all of us in it with him.
Not just me.
Us.
