Johnson told White House that GOP isn't interested in extending ACA subsidies
Speaker Mike Johnson has told the White House that most House Republicans have little interest in extending the Affordable Care Act's enhanced subsidies, sources familiar with the conversation told CBS News. Johnson delivered the message in a phone call with senior administration officials as President Trump's advisers were drafting a plan to continue the subsidies for an additional two years. That plan that was initially expected to emerge this week. The Wall Street Journal first reported Joh ...
Anti-fascist groups named as US terror threats 'barely exist', experts say
Tue 25 Nov 2025 08.00 EST Last modified on Tue 25 Nov 2025 12.24 EST Experts have told the Guardian the same anti-fascist groups the US state department recently named as foreign terrorist organizations and accused of conspiring to undermine foundations of western civilization barely qualify as groups, let alone terrorist organizations, and pose no active threat to Americans. The whole thing is a bit ridiculous, said Heidi Beirich, co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremi ...
Trump Canceling GDP Report Comes Under Scrutiny
Nov 25, 2025 at 04:37 AM EST The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis said on Monday that it has canceled the release of its advance estimate of third-quarter GDP. The department said the release was being canceled due to disruption caused by the federal government shutdown, but the announcement has sparked criticism and speculation that the report is being held because of disappointing data. Newsweek contacted the White House and the BEA via email on Tuesday outside of regular working hours. Wh ...
Ukraine agrees to peace proposal, with only "minor details" to settle, official says, but no word from Russia
A U.S. official told CBS News on Tuesday that Ukraine's government had "agreed to a peace deal" brokered by the Trump administration to stop Russia's nearly four-year assault. The American official and Ukraine's national security adviser Rustem Umerov said a common understanding on a proposal had been reached, with details still to be worked out. Umerov voiced optimism that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could travel to the U.S. before the end of November to finalize an agre ...
Witkoff Advised Russia on How to Pitch Ukraine Plan to Trump
US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff, fresh from the triumph of the Gaza peace deal, held a phone call last month with a senior Kremlin official to suggest they work together on a similar plan for Ukraine and that Vladimir Putin should raise it with Donald Trump. In an Oct. 14 phone call that lasted a little over five minutes, Witkoff advised Yuri Ushakov, Putins top foreign policy aide, on how the Russian leader should broach the issue with Trump. His guidance included suggestions on setting ...
Private payroll losses accelerated in the past four weeks, ADP reports
(CNBC) The U.S. labor market is showing further signs of weakening as the pace of layoffs has picked up over the past four weeks, payrolls processing firm ADP reported Tuesday. Private companies lost an average of 13,500 jobs a week over the past four weeks, ADP said as part of a running update it has been providing. Thats an acceleration from the 2,500 jobs a week lost in the last update a week ago. With the government shutdown still impacting data releases, alternative data like ADPs has been filling in the blanks on the economic picture.
Majority of Latino voters disapprove of Trump, Pew study finds
(The Guardian) After receiving support from nearly half of Latino voters in the 2024 election, Trump had lost the backing of a majority surveyed in October. Pew found that 70% of Latinos disapprove of the way Trump is handling his job as president, while 65% disapprove of his administrations approach to immigration and 61% believe his economic policies have worsened economic conditions.
House Republicans Mull Quitting
(Axios) Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's (R-Ga.) scathing resignation has rattled her colleagues. Some are questioning whether the job is still worth it when the work is drowned out by censures, violent threats and loyalty tests to President Trump. 41 members have already announced they plan to call it quits at the end of their term, with more expected to follow. Most House lawmakers make $174,000 a year. Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), who is retiring in 2027, told Axios he was "so angry" at the Trump administration's proposed 28-point Russia-Ukraine peace plan last week that he "thought about" resigning early.
White House circulates a plan to extend Obamacare subsidies as Trump pledges health care fix
(Scripps) The draft plan suggests that President Donald Trump is open to extending a provision of Obamacare as his administration and congressional Republicans search for a broader policy solution to a fight that has long flummoxed the party. The White House stresses that no plan is final until Trump announces it. The subsidies were at the heart of the Democrats demands in the government shutdown fight that ended earlier this month. Most Democratic lawmakers had insisted on a straight extension of the tax credits, which expire at the end of the year as a condition of keeping the government open.
Trump abruptly pulled plan to announce Obamacare extension after 'significant congressional backlash': report
(The Independent) Trump and congressional GOP leadership could likely cut a deal with Democrats to secure an extension of the subsidies, but doing so would deepen the divide in the presidents own party. Avoiding the issue, however, would jack up prices for millions of Americans with less than a year to go before a midterm season where the Republican Partys majorities will face a tough defensive battle in both chambers. The consequences of punting the issue now could be devastation for the partys frontline members next year.
