Obama Democracy Forum will convene to focus on tools for bipartisan dialogue

Source: Scripps News

Posted 6:52 PM, Dec 04, 2024

The Obama Democracy Forum kicks off Thursday in Chicago. The goal is to bridge the political divide and get people talking about issues together.

The former president, along with actor Ryan Reynolds and country music singer Reyna Roberts, will be speaking.

Obama Foundation CEO and longtime Barack Obama senior advisor Valerie Jarrett spoke with Scripps News about what to expect from the conference.

"Part of what we're doing [Thursday] is inviting leaders in the community who can take these tools back to their local communities and help the people on the ground who are feeling helpless in this situation," Jarrett said. "I do think there is a hunger around our country and around the world to focus on what we have in common, to avoid the kind of polarization that we're seeing, to talk to each other in a way that's respectful, to disagree and have hard conversations without letting them break down into acrimony."

We need to exercise power when we have it, and create it when we don't.

'Mitch, if you don't advise and consent within 30 days, you will have waived your right and my Justice is seated.'

That's power. And SCOTUS at that time might well have gone along.

Power. That's what politics is about. Democrats need to abandon reconciliation as a goal. It's a tool, not an end game.

That shit was dead before Trump even ran for office. From 2016 on, I've never wanted to so much as hear the word "bipartisanship" ever fucking again.

I absolutely should NOT be hearing it after 11/5/24.

We are not sitting in a circle strumming guitars and singing “Michael Row The Boat Ashore.”

No kumbaya.

I love me some Obama but today is not the time for this.

A slim majority of our fellow citizens just handed the nuclear codes to a convicted felon and sexual predator.

It is time to stand up, show up and put their feet to the fire. Wake up! MAGA Mike is already bragging about reducing Federal agencies by 75 percent.

Ain’t nobody got time for bipartisanship. Pfft

We can never let these fuckers forget that he attempted to overthrow the same damn government they just put him in charge of.

You don't engage in "bipartisanship" after that shit. There is no dialogue to be had.

From Britannica

pluralism, in political science, the view that in liberal democracies power is (or should be) dispersed among a variety of economic and ideological pressure groups and is not (or should not be) held by a single elite or group of elites. Pluralism assumes that diversity is beneficial to society and that autonomy should be enjoyed by disparate functional or cultural groups within a society, including religious groups, trade unions, professional organizations, and ethnic minorities.

This forum is about pluralism and, yes, I had to look it up.

This is why we lost and will continue to lose, in my opinion. People are not interested in esoteric bs like this. My Texas rednecks are interested in two things

Guns and butter (eggs, too)

We never learn.

for compromise with Republicans or conservatives they usually draw back a bloody stump. When will lessons be learned by Democratic leaders? There is no compromise with conservatives. Barry Goldwater, of all people, hit that nail on the head in the 1960s. Nothings changed, so why bother trying. A new tactic is needed. Like standing up to authoritarians. Stop with the Kumbaya, please. Thanks.

R's want to control us and hurt us and talking nice won't change it. What is wrong with people, giving up while being coopted is not a good tactic. I'm sure that's not on his mind, but pretending R;s are normal is what got us into this mess in the first place and this won't fix a damn thing.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. "

In addition to The Constitution, The Declaration of Independence, and The Bill of Rights, every Democrat's office should have the following posted near the door so they can read it every day, and their interns should move it periodically, so the Congressmember doesn't begin to overlook it...

A scorpion wants to cross a river but cannot swim, so it asks a frog to carry it across. The frog hesitates, afraid that the scorpion might sting it, but the scorpion promises not to, pointing out that it would drown if it killed the frog in the middle of the river. The frog considers this argument sensible and agrees to transport the scorpion. Midway across the river, the scorpion stings the frog anyway, dooming them both. The dying frog asks the scorpion why it stung despite knowing the consequence, to which the scorpion replies: "I am sorry, but I couldn't help myself. It's my character."

Obviously they have blinders on and are tone-deaf as well. This little kumbya session is garbage. If that's what Valerie Jarrett has been spending her time on...what a waste!
