Biden promises new air defenses for Ukraine in forceful Nato speech

(The Guardian) Joe Biden has announced that Nato countries will provide Ukraine with five new strategic air defense systems as leaders began a summit in Washington where the alliance was expected to declare Ukraine’s path toward Nato to be “irreversible”. The promise of weapons deliveries, including anti-air defenses sought after by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy, came just a day after a deadly missile strike against a paediatric cancer hospital and other civilian targets in Ukraine that Biden called a “horrific reminder of Russia’s brutality”.

President Biden says Greg Abbott and Dan Patrick delayed federal Beryl aid

(Houston Chronicle) President Joe Biden said Tuesday that the federal government had to delay distribution of emergency relief supplies, including power generators, after Hurricane Beryl hit Texas because the White House could not reach state leaders to get the major disaster declaration request needed to release them. Biden’s comments come as Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is serving as acting governor while Greg Abbott is on an economic development trip in Asia. The president said in an exclusive interview with the Houston Chronicle that he had been trying to “track down” the governor to get the necessary requests to release the federal aid, which includes manpower and supplies.

Senate Republicans block Democratic votes on abortion bills

(The Hill) Senate Republicans blocked an attempt by Democrats to pass a series of abortion-related bills Tuesday, as the party seeks to keep a focus on abortion and access to reproductive health care ahead of the November election. One bill was aimed at protecting the freedom to travel across state lines to access abortion care. Another bill would have protected doctors in states where abortion is legal from being held liable for providing services to patients from other states, and a third bill was meant to support training more abortion care providers.

The first list describes gifts from far-right real estate magnate Harlan Crow, and the second list shows gifts from other wealthy sponsors, like entrepreneur Anthony Welters — who "loaned" Thomas a luxury RV and then later forgave the loan — and billionaire Wayne Huizenga. The gifts from Crow date back to 2003, and list excursions like "Yacht trip to Russia and the Baltics" and "Helicopter to Yusipov Palace, St. Petersburg."

(VOA) Russia is turning to a familiar playbook in its attempt to sway the outcome of the upcoming U.S. presidential election, looking for ways to boost the candidacy of former President Donald Trump by disparaging the campaign of incumbent President Joe Biden, according to American intelligence officials. A new assessment of threats to the November election, shared Tuesday, does not mention either candidate by name. But an intelligence official told reporters that the Kremlin view of the U.S. political landscape has not changed from previous election cycles.
