in various ways to force people to fall in line after an authoritarian takeover. It's always happened to various degrees where they had the power over smaller communities, and now it's been emboldened in more.

Given modern surveillance and control capabilities, the dangers of authoritarian control are also much bigger and more dangerous than ever before.
