I'm going to generalize a bit, but people who don't have empathy tend to back more conservative policies. They are the "serves them right" crowd. They like people who make bad decisions to suffer. They see the world as black and white. They struggle with nuance and ambiguity.
On the other hand, people who have empathy tend to back more open policies. They like the idea the people caught in bad circumstances can be helped. They tend to be less decisive because they want to make informed, fact based decisions.
It's just a different mentality. But in my opinion that is how conservative people can still support Trump.

In the South it has much to do with racism. Personal experience cause that's where I keep all my stuff.

No. The midwest has a lot of support for Trump, and most states have right-wing pockets.

My north TX neighborhood had alot more signage up in support of GOP candidates. So far i've only seen 4 trump signs
