Maybe he's thinking that the dumb gradeschool cosplay stuff makes it harder to take the GOP seriously, and then we all can't realize how amazingly legitimate and well-justified the party's racist underpinnings are. 
Of course, you can't really separate the two: both the stupid antics and the racist worldview require the same level of pre-teen rationalizing.
But anyway... gleefully "taking back" the word "garbage" or wearing tampons on their shirts, or even the stupid nicknames, these are not at all the flexes that Republicans so desperately think they are. It's just so cringe
