(8,347 posts)Of course I'm angry. I despise the people who brought us here, and equally or more, the inattentive and self-deluding people who just went along with Trump so they could avoid conflict with friends and family. I despise the people who did nothing because they didn't want to take sides- as if the choice of inaction would make them less culpable.
Anger is good because it is true. Anger is good when it moves you to action. Anger is bad when it raises your blood pressure. Anger is bad when it pushes you to petty reprisals. One more category that is important to me- anger is appropriate when it drives a wedge between you and your family and former friends. I am used to living with anger. The election in 2000 changed my relationship with my family. 2016 changed my relationships with friends and strangers. 2024 is just more of the same.
I want to accomplish two things while living in a society that makes me angry. First, as much as possible, I want to transform as much of that anger as possible into constructive action. Secondly, I do not want to let the anger that visits me impair my health or happiness.
There are many choices to be made.
