(3,745 posts)I was diagnosed with prostate cancer over 10 years ago. My Doctor and I decided to use "active surveillance", with an exam and PSA blood test every six months. When the PSA finally got to 10, he told me it was time to do something. I elected direct beam radiation, a course of 5 days per week for 9 weeks. I had no side effects, other than showing up 5 days a week and not getting paid for it.
It's been 3 years since the radiation treatment. I still get checked every 6 months and my most recent PSA was 0.56. So far, so good, and I'm still surfing at 77, but every one is different and the age you're first diagnosed is a factor on electing between surgery or radiation. Listen to your doctor.
If you have any questions, you know how to get in touch.
Good luck and best wishes.
