74. Dr Louis Guillotin invented what came to be called the guillotine,

and he did so because hanging and beheading (with an axe) took so long (using the axe multiple rimes because the first time didn't work was the rule, not the exception) and he wanted to come up with a more merciful (because faster) method of execution. He was appalled at the uses to which he saw it being used, particularly during the Reign of Terror, and bitterly regretted having invented it. And probably even more bitterly regretted that his name was all over it.
