Or any chattel owning society. It's normally against the law to teach people to read, write, or do math... let alone history and other higher topics. If people are educated in these subjects they can learn on their own what's going on. They can think critically and then rebel against their station in life. For the rich and powerful its important to keep the status quo. It's easier to control the people if they're uneducated. I won't say what I'm thinking about these people right now.
