(226 posts)If you don’t have any standards all democrats must meet, it’s hard to say what you stand for. Mass murderer? Ok! Baby puncher? Ok! Hate crime supporter? Ok! Fascist extrajudicial extradition and imprisonment? Ok! We might disagree on the basic standards we hold people, even democrats, to, but I think all non nihilists have some standards. I don’t expect loved ones, let alone politicians, to meet all my standards, but I some I cling to a lot harder than others. In politics, my only power besides my vote is my voice. Hopefully, voices similar to mine are heard and considered along with others as politicians form their own opinions on issues. It’s possible to have one goal with many voices.
It seems you’re upset about something other than OP’s post. Something that probably goes back to 2002 or 2004 or whatever you gestured at in other posts. Kerry lost cuz “woke”? I think it’s telling that you seem to be a lot more alarmed by we democrats not uniting behind the silent than you are about this administrations constitutional and legal transgressions. Having a difference of opinion on particular issues does not necessarily divide our party although you seem determined to create a division. Shoot, presidential hopefuls can criticize each other for a whole primary season and survive to run together. This bifurcation of cheering and criticizing seems to be a simplistic abstraction. We can obviously do both. Yay Booker. Boo Trump. Yay Crockett. Boo Vance. Yay due process rights. Boo those elected officials who won’t explain why they don’t support some of them.
“That will only help Republicans?” You’ve repeated this often without a little thing called argument or at least a fleshed out narrative. Most of us have been alive long enough to remember when this or that happened. It doesn’t make us experts. In this particular case, what’s your argument? Don’t vote for the democrats some democrats have problems with, vote for me, a republican, who almost all democrats have a problem with? It seems your real argument isn’t that the criticism harms democrats directly, but that “purity tests”moves the Party platform to the left which alienates too much of the center-right to remain viable in future elections.
