I don't know if it's due to cutbacks and potentially not as many rangers driving around to remind people and keep large animals away from the roads, but some people don't understand just because an enormous elk remains calm if you're 50 feet away, that doesn't mean it won't spook or accidentally hurt you if you get up next to it or try to feed it. These are wild animals who might be placid and used to people at a distance, but they weigh hundreds of pounds and can potentially maim or kill you with one kick or jerk of the head if you get close enough.

Even if they don't intend to, they don't know their own strength.
