Iran had a democratically elected government in 1953. Britain had developed and controlled their oil production during colonial rule, then Iran nationalized the industry. Britain imposed harsh economic sanctions, so Iran turned to the Soviet Union for trade.

Cold War politics came into play, and the US helped Britain stage a coup which brought the Shah to power. After a quarter century of corrupt repressive rule, the Shah was overthrown in 1979 during the Islamation Revolution that brought the Ayatollah to power.

In 1980, with backing from the USA, Saddam Hussein launched a bloody invasion of Iran that was finally repelled 8 years later.

It should come as no surprise they regard us as the Great Satan, and would seek to build the ultimate deterrent.

The best chance to prevent that from happening was the multinational nuclear inspection deal of 2015, which Trump tore up in his first term.

Regime change in Iran? Nothing unites a country like an attack from a hated enemy. Ain't gonna happen short of bombing the country into a devasted hellscape like Gaza, but this is a nation of 92 million people.

Death, destruction, trajedy and suffering on a massive scale. Bibi, Donald, and the Magaverse may salivate at that prospect, but I say NOT IN MY NAME.
