it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or parliament or a communist dictatorship. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.

He was referring to war, but I think it also applies to rightwing propaganda in America today.

Their voters are convinced the American way of life is under assault by godless liberal communists, homosexuals, muslims, hordes of brown-skinned immigrants, etc -- and the Republican Party is the champion for God and Country.

On Jan 6 2021 Trump told his crowd they have to "fight like hell" or they "won't have a country any more."

All other political issues pale in comparison to the FEAR of losing what they've been conditioned to believe is America -- a white Christian patriarchy with low taxes and no handouts to the undeserving.
