Are often wrong, because they are supposed to be recalibrated regularly, but often are not.

Their height measurements are sometimes inaccurate too—a few years ago one doc’s staff told me I had lost nearly 1.5 inches in height. I was alarmed because it could indicate some bad health conditions, but at a different office all was fine. When I went back to the first, several months later, I was “back to my normal” height and they said nonchalantly, “oh yeah—we had a problem with that.”
