They came in a booklet, making it clearly obvious that the purchaser was "on welfare", and some folks took that as an invitation to berate the user. I was one of those who relied on food stamps; on one memorable occasion the man in line behind me noticed that I'd purchased a small pizza and he took loud exception to how I was squandering HIS money. I didn't bother responding, having learned it would do no good. Not that it matters, the pizza was a small thank you to the neighbor who routinely helped with small chores; his stamps usually ran out after a couple of weeks.

I still rely on SNAP, it doesn't last very long; and I've had my groceries delivered since covid, so I don't get glowered at by other shoppers. That said, I have zero tolerance for anyone who loudly opines about how the poor are making the rich miserable. Feisty old ladies have a lifetime of words and nothing to lose by glaring at idiots.
