12. I think that half of life's problems can be prevented by just not getting yourself in the situation in the first place.

The US is past this point. The one third of us who are authoritarians and the one third who, up until recently, didn’t really care as long as they got their hamberders and sportsball have gotten us into a situation from which there is no good answer.
But Trump is a liability to the Republican party, as well as the country and world. Trump energizes the Republican maga base, which is 80% of the party. But he also energizes Democratic voters to vote against him, and now, increasingly, it looks like the ignorant and apathetic third of non-voters are waking up and many will vote against him. Trump even divides the Republican leadership.
If Vance took power now he would probably lose some of the maga base, they wouldn't vote Democratic but would stay home. But the never Trumper Republicans would come back, and the apathetic and ignorant voters probably would go back to staying home.
It's like if you have neighbors that you don’t get along with, and whom you have constantly told that their son is dangerous. When you see him setting fire to their garage do you call the fire department before any damage is done, or do you wait until the garage is in blazes. If you call immediately they will continue to ignore the problem. If you wait until severe damage is done the police will be involved and the neighbors will be forced to take action, hopefully before he burns your house down. Of course the best answer is to have moved before it got to that point.
