Children often don't understand consequences because their brains are still developing, lacking the mature prefrontal cortex needed for impulse control, long-term planning, and risk assessment. Younger children, especially under age 3, cannot connect past actions to present outcomes, often living in the immediate moment. Furthermore, when children are dysregulated, stressed, or in "survival mode," their brain cannot process logic or lessons, rendering traditional consequences ineffective.
