I believe the DHS shutdown is becoming a political liability for us. [View all]
The long lines are continuing at the airports. The TSA agents are working without pay. Air traffic controllers are becoming overstressed.
The largest block of voters are not Democrats or Republicans. They are independents. Many of them don't trust either party to make a difference in their lives. Shutdowns don't help change that; they reinforce the distrust. There is only so much a party can accomplish when it is out of power. If our goal is to make a difference in people's lives, then we need to think strategically about the future to win elections. In 28, if we can capture all three facets of control, that is when we will have the power to make the bold changes that need to be made. In order to get there, we will have to expand our appeal beyond the Democratic Party.
I understand the moral argument behind DHS shutdown. The Trump administration is responsible for the abuses by ICE and the immigration policies. We are responsible for our actions also.
