I don't want to give Vance TOO MUCH CREDIT, but I'll go out on a limb and say...whether he'd ever be willing to admit it in public or not...he knows this is "wrong."

Even if that admission only goes so far as knowing it isn't playing well in Trump's base. Even if it's only crass opportunism. But I think that, "in private," Vance probably saw it and went "Oh HELL no."
