Torn between the CT explanation and the 'official' explanation, I was pleased to find a Facebook post, written by Robert Slager, that makes a lot of sense. Here is a piece of it:

I don't believe this was staged. I believe the suspect was radicalized by social media and decided to lash out against his political enemies. But I do think Trump and the Secret Service were aware of the threat in advance. Multiple reports indicated that the suspect's family warned law enforcement about the mental stability of the shooter before the incident began. Instead of cancelling the event, Trump and his team sought to gain maximum political advantage from the situation. Trump and his administration were never in any actual danger. Secret Service confronted the shooter on an entirely different floor. There were dozens of armed officers protecting the ballroom. I think they knew he was coming and did nothing to stop him. Otherwise he would have been shot immediately.
