'What would the Founders think?' [View all]
I see this a lot, and quite honestly, a certain Clark Gable-as-Rhett Butler quote comes to mind.
If you want to know what the Founders wouldve thought on something, look at one of the most important Founders, Thomas Jefferson, who felt the Constitution should be updated every 19 years because he warned it would get outdated. Its been 34 years.
And considering what Christian Nationalists are trying to, how Byron Donalds wanted to criminalize peaceful protests against Israel, Im not sure even they are following the spirit of the Founders.
America has evolved with amendments beyond the Bill of Rights, and many Americans (such as myself) want certain new amendments. Would the Founders have imagined 50 states, people of color being free, let alone as President and Vice President? They mightve imagined someone like the Felon in the White House, but evidently didnt imagine others in power folding like lawn chairs when it came to holding him accountable.
So, spare me of what the Founders from the 18th and 19th Centuries wouldve thought. My gratitude goes to them for setting this country up - a country which has greatly evolved since their initial rules.
Beyond our gratitude for getting things set up, we owe our Founders nothing.
