It's a special kind of apricot with three times the taste intensity of "normal" apricots. They come from the Wachautal (Wachau Valley) in Austria.

Staud's is considered the gold standard of the brands that are occasionally available outside Austria, although D'Arbo isn't bad for a more mass production. Fair warning--that stuff is extremely addictive!

In the Wachau Valley itself, there are several small family-owned ventures. The Tastl family makes a Marillen Nektar that is thicker than egg nog, and it is not advisable to open a bottle of it with other people around, because violent fights may erupt over who gets to polish the bottle off. And it isn't even booze--just the best fruit juice in the world.
