Francine Shapiro, who developed the model, kept a tight reign on who could use the treatment in their practice, initially requiring them to be trained directly by her or 1-2 other research associates, including extensive practicum hours and supervision. EMDR wasn’t something that could be learned in a weekend workshop.

Then about ten years ago, something did change; perhaps there were enough experienced practitioners in the field now, but trainings became more widespread and easier to access, and stringent requirements for certification seemed to be relaxed, so more therapists began advertising it as part of their practice.
