Mass shootings in the United States between 1982 and December 2023, by presence of prior signs of shooter's mental health issues
In 72 cases out of a total of 149 reported mass shootings in the United States since 1982, the shooter(s) displayed prior signs of mental health problems. In 17 cases out of 149, there were no signs of mental health issues in the shooters.

Adding:
The authors of the new papers, who specialize in medicine, law or both, find 40 states require reporting to NICS when a court orders an individual committed as an inpatient to a psychiatric care facility. Five states allow but do not require such reporting, while the final 5 states do not have reporting laws covering involuntary inpatient commitments.
