If the trailer loses the state, yes - perhaps they should drop out - because their ability to win overall just got smaller.


Your question operates from the premise that the two candidates are in an equal position and so answerers MUST play it "both ways". That's faulty logic.


Your question is the equivalent of this analogy:

Team A is ahead by a score of 6-2 after the 4th inning against Team B. Your question is basically "whoever loses the 5th inning should drop out!"



That's faulty logic. Your question is nonsensical. OF COURSE there are "different rules" for the leader than for the trailer. There's supposed to be.
