3catwoman3's JournalAnother Canadian ancestry/citizenship question.
Relatively recently, I have learned, via Ancestry.com, that almost all of my father's family comes from Canada, primarily Ontario. My dad was born and raised in Chicago, IL. My paternal grandmother shows up in US census records as being born in Michigan, but everyone else in her immediate family, and at least 2 generations back, were born in Canada. Her mother, her father, and both her siblings, grand parents and great-grandparents. In the 1901 Canadian census, she is listed as being born in Northumberland, Ontario.
When I inquired about this from someone else in the family tree (whom I've never met), the speculation, seeing as her father's occupation was listed as farmer, was that the family may have traveled around picking crops during various harvesting seasons, and happened to be in the US when my grandmother was born. She was the oldest of her parents' 3 children.
If born to Canadian parents while they happened to be on the road in the US, would my grandmother have had dual citizenship?
It pleases me greatly to have Canadian ancestry.
Goodbye, hearts - with a nod to Ricky Nelson
I always miss the hearts once the fundraiser is over, so here is a musical farewell.
Follow up to the August grandbaby post from earlier in the week - it's a boy.
And no extra chromosomes, so I can breathe a bit easier.
Our DILs brother and his wife have 2 sons, just turned 3 and not yet a year. They live in the area, so I foresee some lively cousin get togethers in a few years.
They are keeping name ideas to themselves, as we did. We told people what we were having, but not who we were having.
I miss the hearts when the fundraiser ends. They look so cheerful.
For the past several years, I have taken a cell phone picture of mine so I can go back and look at them in those moments when I might need a little pick-me-up.
Looking for "heartless" DUers. I have 7 left...
...and would very much like to give them to anyone who has escaped notice.
Let me know here or in DU mail.
If all goes well, a grandbaby will be arriving in August!
A first for me, a third for my previously-married husband. I had our kids late, at 38 and 41, and will be 75 in April.
On Christmas Day, our younger son and his adorable wife surprised us with the announcement that they are expecting their first child. They are 33 and 31, and have been married for 3 years. We had absolutely no idea that they were even close to being ready for this, so were completely shocked.
They did it in a cute way. We were at her parents' house, which has been the custom for the last 5 years since they became an official couple. They gave us a calendar and said that their favorite picture was the one for August. We flipped to that page and did not notice right away that in the square for August 22nd, in orange marker, our DIL's favorite color, she had written "Baby (our last name) Due Date." I'm sure my eyes must have about popped out of my head. I burst into tears.
I'm excited and terrified all at the same time. Due to a career in pediatrics, I know all too well all the things that can go wrong. In nursing school, we were all looking forward to our OB class, thinking, "Oh, moms and babies. This is going to be fun!" Not so much. The instructors spent the first 6 weeks lecturing about all the potential complications, and most of us temporarily vowed that we were never going to have kids.
I know I will not draw an easy breath until this baby arrives safely. NIPT (non-invasive prenatal testing) lab test drawn this week, so we will know more in a couple of weeks. They do plan to find out the gender and will tell us.
If you like soup/chowder, and have a Costco membership...
...I enthusiastically recommend their shrimp & corn chowder. It comes in a 2 pack, from a company called Blount Clam Shack.
Lots of shrimp, lots of corn, and bits of red pepper in a light creamy base - scrumptious! With the cold weather we've been having in the greater Chicago area, this has quite hit the spot. We bought it for the first time last week, and have already gone back twice for more.
Social Security COLA - BFD!
Just got my explanation of benefits from Social Security, explaining how much "more" I will be getting, and how much more Medicare will cost.
My monthly deposit is actually going to go down by $12.00. Negligible, obviously, but it sure doesn't feel like an increase. What a bunch of BS.
Maybe this shouldn't piss me off so much, but it does.
Please tell me that this is NOT a word - lawsuited
I was listening to the Chicago area progressive radio station in my car this afternoon, and twice heard the gust during the 3 o'clock hour say "lawsuited" when speaking about someone who had sued someone else.
The second time I heard it, I was yelling at the radio, "Lawsuit is a noun! It doesn't have a past tense!"
"The Honorable Pam Bondi." Hah!
Watching Lawrence O' right now, with clips from her hearing today. To borrow one of Trump's favorite attack words, what a nasty woman she is.
That placard in front of her should read The Dishonorable Pamela Bondi.
Someone's mama didn't teach her no manners.
And she's stupid (or arrogant) enough to ask Adam Schiff if he has a law degree?
