JT45242's JournalShemar Stewart and guaranteed money for NFL rookies
First remember that 1/2 or more of all first round picks are basically busts or such underachievers compared to the draft slot and money paid them in the first four years of the contract. Sometimes it is play. Sometimes it is off the field stuff. The Bengals want to remove guaranteed money for off the field issues.
Based on what is being leaked by both sides -- here is what the Bengals are demanding in the contract with Shemar Stewart
They want to be able to void the guaranteed money in the rookie deal if he...
1) Violates the league drug policy (cocaine, etc.)
2) Violated the PED policy (steroids etc)
3) Violates the league conduct policy and is put on the commissioner exempt list (gets arrested for a felony, video of domestic violence are the most common reason players have ended up on that list)
Unclear if they want a more broad "morals clause" or "conduct detrimental to the team" based on conflicting leaks/insider info from both sides.
I think most fans would say that #1-3 should allow a club to get out from under the guaranteed money. If a player would rather do drugs, get caught taking steroids, or engage in felony behaviors, then perhaps their ought to be economic consequences.
What I am wondering, is why this draft pick? Why now? Besides the complete lack of production in college as red flag, what do they know that they want this language that they did not seek out for the many first round draft busts they have had along the offensive and defensive line in the last 15 years since they drafted Eric Zeitler? If they were this concerned why would you draft a player who only had 4.5 sacks total in college in the first round?
Would the Bengals be winning the PR battle if they just said -- we want #1-3 as part of standard rookie contract? The Bengals and other teams have included this kind of language for free agents.
The league went to a rookie salary cap because of how much money was being absolutely wasted on guys with no track record who washed out.
DU Jury question
What are you supposed to do if you think a post likely should be banned, but it doesn't break the rule it was flagged for?
The "doesn't anyone want to impress Jodie Foster anymore" doesn't attack it flame a member of the DU community; however, it is advocating violence.
Not sure if this is the correct forum. But would like feedback on what to do in the future.
Stop retiring jersey numbers...not enough to go around
The Abdul Carter picking a jersey number is just another episode in football's bad habit of retiring jersey numbers.
With 53 man regular season rosters plus another dozen or so practice squad players who need numbers in case they get activated and 90 players on preseason rosters there are simply not enough numbers to go around.
Add the complications of certain numbers that must be worn by players eligible to touch the ball.
There aren't enough numbers available.
Teams should have rings of honor or team Hall of Fame that show the name with jersey number. But the number needs to be still available.
Football is unlike any other sport in that more than half of the available numbers MUST be used
When, not if, the NFL expands to 18 games rosters will likely increase again to 53 active out of 58. Plus the practice squad.
Honor your players. But do not take numbers out of circulation.
Uncle in law and "lesser of two evils"
My wife's uncle died and we came to northwest ohio (about an hour west of Toledo) to go to the various services. Because of work obligations, I only attended the viewing and not the funeral, graveside, and luncheon at the VFW.
My wife's uncle in law said he voted for Trump because he was the "lesser of two evils" but wasn't happy with what was happening.
So disappointed in her that she didn't say what I always say to that..."really. He stole so much money from a charity, he isn't legally allowed to be involved one anymore. He stole so much from a school, he isn't legally allowed to anymore. He has refused to pay so many times. He has been sued by literally thousands of contractors. Even without paying his contractors he still went bankrupt with casinos multiple times. He committed so much real estate and tax fraud, that his company is banned from selling real estate. He was found by a jury of his peers to be a sexual assaulter and the only reason that they could not call it rape was that in that state rape must be forcible use of a penis and they weren't certain whether it was a finger or a penis. Another jury of his peers found that he maliciously lied about his assault victim repeatedly and said he had to pay her almost $90 million in damages. He committed espionage by taking top secret documents about how to attack Iran and showed them to an Australian billionaire to try to impress him. He ordered people to destroy evidence of his espionage.
Now you please lust whatever is more evil that a decorated attorney general, prosecutor, and senator without a single corruption case has done.
(Crickets)
So the only evil thing she's done is to be an uppity black woman.
She hates it when I do that only got through all of it once. Usually the racists walk away partially thru his list of real evil because they have nothing to stand on.
Did have one racist asshat say "if they could go after trump for what he did. They could go after any of us "
I literally said "if course you're right. Who standing here didn't have sex with a pornstar while our wife was nursing our new son and then pay her off to stay silent with company money.
She wants to keep peace
I want them all to know that they can't hide like they have pillowcases with eyeholes any more.
MVP and Offensive player of year
Been listening to a lot of pundits over the last couple of weeks about these two.
MVP has gone to a QB of the number one seed in one of the conferences ever since 2012 and Adrian Peterson win. So, it should be Lion QB based on better season than Mahomes. But if we are going to look past that. Jackson isn't even the MVP of his own team based on how defenses play them. Look at every first half play against the Steelers in the playoffs as an example. They literally ignored Lamar with the first guy who always went after King Henry. Look at the amount of 8 man boxes he threw against. Higher seed , josh Allen. Eye test of who is more important to their team based on how defenses play them, Josh Allen.
If we were honest MVP should be Saquon but he should not be offensive player of the year. No late season collapse by the Eagles because I'm the cold, Saquon had giant games down the stretch.
OPOY
There have been 5, count them 5, players to win the receiving triple crown including Jamar Chase. Chase did it with his #2 in and out of the lineup. So he faced a lot of double coverage. People forget how amazing that is because Kupp did it a few years ago. Chase cannot be MVP because he didn't pull his team into the playoffs (more of an indictment of a moronic coach and poor depth on defense and offensive lines than Chase or Burrow fault).
Saquon is the 8th best rushing session in total yards but is dwarfed in yards per game by the OJ 2000 yard season in 14 games.
You can be the most valuable player and not be the offensive player of the year. MVP implies you made your team better and that it was meaningful enough to impact playoff seeding given when they vote.
If Lamar had missed a few games would they still be the third seed given the problems that the Steelers, Bengals and Browns have? Yes. Would the Bills be the number 2 seed without Josh Allen... nope.
The Saquon case is easier. The Eagles are #2 seed rolling into the playoffs this year with him. Last year without them they were a train wreck at the end of the season.
Felon and rapist before a woman elected president...
All you need to know about how rampant sexism and racism are rooted in this country.
Trump beat women twice. He lost to a man. He was less qualified than all 3.
As a convicted felon and adjudicated rapist he won the plurality of the vote against the black woman.
It wasn't policy. It wasn't that he resonated with some part of the voters.
Many American voters chose an unqualified, criminal, failure over a qualified black woman.
Kill vaccines by killing ACA...
If they kill that ACA which mandates that preventative care like vaccines are covered 100%,they can attack vaccines in many ways.
They can then issue a decree that since there are some religious objections to vaccines, it would be a violation of their christofascist principles to force plan holders to absorb part of the cost as part of a religious freedom argument.
Consequently, vaccines go from 100% coverage to NO ALLOWED coverage. So, only the rich can afford it. Furthermore, it would allow them to ban it from Medicare and Medicaid. No shingles. No RSV. No polio boosters for the poor and old when polio becomes endemic in the US again.
Added bonus it kills off a lot of old people as flu, RSV, and polio wipe out the old.
Just trying to think like a christofascist while I can't sleep and taking the logical (in their minds) consequences of how to combine religious freedom arguments (christofascist versions are the only versions free to operate) and their fascist plans to kill off the old and poor.
Of course, they aren't smart enough to realize that this counteracts the abortion ban and gutting of public education and the long game of trying to generate millions of poor workers willing to work for minimum wage or sub current minimum wage as well as forcing people who previously lived on social security back into the market for jobs this creating a glut of workers and driving wages down.
Please allow me this rant...
I woke up after 3 hours of sleep seething with anger ... and I want to get this off my chest. Hopefully it won't get marked for deletion.
I am most angry at the spineless work of the Attorney General -- who slow walked ALL of the indictments for TFG and the rest of the coup conspirators. I am also angry at the people here who kept responding to those of who would say "Justice delayed is justice denied" that Garland knows best and that the wheel of justice grind slowly. Well, as always for Republicans, the wheels of justice do not grind at all.
I am angry at the spinelessness of Judge Merchan -- TFG should have been sentenced like anyone else. You know what your slow walking sentencing until after the election is going to get Judge M -- a trip to the gulag/re-education camp/concentration camp , just like everyone else who ever angered the orange felon. You treated him with kid gloves and now he will likely have you jailed, tortured, and/or killed.
All the other judges who let him deny and delay.
We all know that you get all the justice that you can afford in this country -- TFG shows you get the justice people think you can afford if they think you are a billionaire even if you are just a money laundering pass through for russian oligarchs.
I am not angry at the Mitch McConnell's of the world. They are who they said they were -- they always put party power over over the country and the people.
I am angry at all the Dems who came before who let every powerful criminal republican get away with every crime they committed. Nixon paid the North Vietnamese to stay away from the peace talks -- no problem, no charges. Agnew only had to resign. His enablers -- people like GHW Bush who tried to extort a Senator to influence a prosecution were never held accountable. If the old man was disgraced -- perhaps we would have been spared the shrub and lies about WMD as well. I still cannot believe that when the Dems got confirmation in the last year of Reagan's second term that he and Jim Baker gave satchels full of cash to the Iranians to hold onto the hostages until after the lection, that they did not want to splinter the country by impeaching Reagan. Of course, if they had GHW would not have been elected and Bill Barr would not have been able to screw over the justice system twice covering up crimiinality by the Republican party (I'll pass over the people who said that Bill Barr would be a good AG because he had been before -- he was a fixer the first time and a fixer the second time -- he was basically a mafia lawyer for the GOP).
I am angry at the over 16 million people who voted in 2020 who didn't this time.
But I am also angry because I am so sad. Talking to my friend who works at a state university in the midwest with a lot of LGTBQ+ students and he said he is actively checking on over 30 students to make certain that they don't self harm or become suicidal. I am sad that my trans niece will almost surely have her puberty blockers outlawed and I fear what damage that will wreak on her. I am sad that soon what few counties that will still have hospitals in them will all have iron lung wings again as polio makes a comeback as the antivaxxers take over what is left (if anything is ) of the CDC and NIH. I am sad because when they ban abortion and get rid of the german measels (rubella) vaccination -- that pregnant women will catch rubella and it will cause miscarriages that cannot be treated until the woman is nearly dead from sepsis. I am sad that by the end of next January that there will no longer be a Taiwan -- that China will invade as long as they all a trump tower in the rebuilt version of Taipei City. I am sad that after Ukraine, Russia will start swallowing up the rest of the former Societ union as the NATO treaty will be worthless and the US will be compliant in a great axis of evil. I am saddened because although I plan to find a job in education in some other part of the world, that the people that I work with will all lose their jobs because when Project 2025 dismantles the Dept of Education -- there will be no need for work that we do for state, district, and federal contracts.
I am saddened that so many people just voted effectively to end the ACA and that people that they love will have to choose bankruptcy or death when they lose their insurance due to pre-existing conditions or lifetime caps. Many of them voted aginst an uppity black woman and have effectively signed the death warrant of themselves or someone in their family.
I am both angry and sad that I will have to tell my wife whose father has terminal cancer -- honey, whether he is still alive or not, we gotta be out of the country by Jan 19. Because I will not go to a re-education camp or whatever concentration they will but intelligentsia and rabble rousers like me. I am even more angry that the NRA and Fox news turned my FIL who once was a minister working on anti-Racism initiatives in NC with the Rev. Barber Senior into someone who voted for tRump at least twice. And I may lose my wife because I cannot stay here --- the new nazis and apartheid clyde have told you what they will do in Project 2025 and on stage believe it. There will be no guard rails.
Mike Pompeo and Mike pence will get the rapture they wanted
WW3 is coming. This time the evil axis will be the USA, Russia, and China.
It will be the end of the world.
I'm hoping to find a job in new Zealand or Australia so like in one of those post nuclear war dystopian novels. I must get survive a little longer.
The country is so ruined by racism and sexism that it is beyond saving
Even if the blue wall holds and Harris wins. That a convicted felon, adjudicated rapist who us unqualified and incapable of doing the job is even a legitimate candidate because white males won't vote for a black woman because she wouldn't go on Rogan podcast or whatever excuse for their racism and sexism they come up with us just pathetic.
That any Latino would vote for trump is beyond me.
I can only hope that some firmer British Commonwealth country needs someone in science education and assessment in my job skill set.
