Washington-based USS Nimitz redirected to Middle East 'without delay'

USS Nimitz diverted, ordered to Middle East
KOMO News

BREMERTON, Wash. — The Bremerton-based aircraft carrier USS Nimitz its strike group are being redirected to the Middle East from their current deployment in the Western Pacific, according to two U.S. officials.
The carrier was initially scheduled to make a port of call in Da Nang, Vietnam, June 20, but that stop has been canceled.

One of the officials said the Nimitz is being directed to proceed to the Middle East "without delay."

Officials told CNN the Nimitz group was already scheduled to replace the USS Carl Vinson in the Middle East prior to the order.

The redirection comes as tensions escalate between Israel and Iran, following Israel's strike on Iran's nuclear program last Friday, which prompted Iran to retaliate with a missile barrage targeting Israeli sites.

U.S. Air Force Refueling Tankers deploying all day

Tankers Deploy to Europe as US Weighs Options in Israel-Iran War

June 16, 2025 | By Chris Gordon
SHARE ARTICLE

Dozens of aerial refueling tankers have flown from American military bases to Europe as the U.S. considers its options for potential involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict, U.S. officials said. The Navy has also dispatched the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier to the Middle East from the Pacific.

The armada of over two dozen tankers—a mix of KC-46 Pegasus and KC-135 Stratotanker jets—deployed to Morón Air Base, Spain; Ramstein Air Base, Germany; and other European bases, according to open-source flight tracking data. (Update- 32 tankers so far)

U.S. officials said the forward deployment provided President Donald Trump and the U.S. military with more flexibility in their decision-making. As of June 16, the tankers did not appear to be heading farther east to U.S.-run bases in the Middle East. The U.S. Air Force’s Europe-based aerial refueling jets occasionally support missions in U.S. Central Command, which oversees American forces in the Middle East.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth acknowledged June 16 he has ordered additional U.S. forces to the Middle East, but did not provide further details.

“Over the weekend, I directed the deployment of additional capabilities to the United States Central Command Area of Responsibility,” he wrote on X. “Protecting U.S. forces is our top priority and these deployments are intended to enhance our defensive posture in the region.”

That’s about all the tankers they can scramble on short notice. That’s a lot of tankers. Kc-135’s and KC-46’s, all going to multiple bases across Europe, the Med, and elsewhere.

2 people shot, including suspect in custody, during 'No Kings' protest in Salt Lake City, Utah

Source: Utah Dispatch

The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred during a “No Kings” protest Saturday night, leaving one person with critical injuries. An estimated 10,000 people were marching at the time.

Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd told media shortly after 10 p.m., about two hours after the incident, that gunshots had been fired as protesters were walking near 151 S. State Street. Police responded immediately, finding one person with life-threatening injuries.

It wasn’t clear whether the first responding officers had heard or seen the shooting, or what alerted them to the incident, Redd said.

Officers received immediate witness information from people in the crowd and pursued the suspected shooter to 200 East and 100 South. It was discovered he too had a gunshot wound, Redd said, and he was treated and taken to a hospital under police observation.

Two more people who Redd said were involved in the incident were also arrested.

Trump administration gives personal data of immigrant Medicaid enrollees to deportation officials

Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s administration this week provided deportation officials with personal data -- including the immigration status -- on millions of Medicaid enrollees, a move that could make it easier to locate people as part of his sweeping immigration crackdown.

An internal memo and emails obtained by The Associated Press show that Medicaid officials unsuccessfully sought to block the data transfer, citing legal and ethical concerns.

Nevertheless, two top advisers to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ordered the dataset handed over to the Department of Homeland Security, the emails show. Officials at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services were given just 54 minutes on Tuesday to comply with the directive.

The dataset includes the information of people living in California, Illinois, Washington state and Washington, D.C., all of which allow non-U.S. citizens to enroll in Medicaid programs that pay for their expenses using only state taxpayer dollars. CMS transferred the information just as the Trump administration was ramping up its enforcement efforts in Southern California.

They aren’t using federal money to pay for Medicaid for these people, yet Trump’s goons took the data.

VA signs $700K agreement with OPM for assistance with mass layoffs

From GovExec.com

The department lacks expertise for such a large reduction, it says, and RIF planners confirm VA leadership is not offering clear guidance.

Updated June 10 at 9:54 p.m.

The Veterans Affairs Department has signed an agreement with the federal government’s human resources office to help it conduct mass layoffs later this year, with VA saying it requires the assistance due to the unprecedented nature of the upcoming cuts.

VA will pay OPM $726,000 for its layoff consultation services, according to the agreement, a copy of which was reviewed by Government Executive, which will “ensure legally compliant reductions in force (RIF) procedures.” The department previously announced it would cut more than 80,000 employees, though VA Secretary Doug Collins subsequently said that number was an initial target and the final total could be revised upward or downward.

“VA [Human Resources and Administration/Operations, Security, and Preparedness] has never undertaken such a large restructuring, and does not have the capabilities, expertise or the internal resources to fulfill the requirement,” the department said in the memo. “Therefore, OPM, an outside resource, will be essential for this effort.”

OPM will provide “qualified, seasoned” HR specialists to help VA reach a level of cuts necessary to meet the demands laid out in President Trump’s executive order calling for workforce reductions and subsequent guidance from OPM and the Office of Management and Budget. VA, like most major agencies, is currently blocked by a federal court ruling from implementing any RIFs or otherwise carrying out its reorganization plans. The administration has requested an emergency stay on that injunction before the Supreme Court, however, which is expected to weigh in within a few days.

Guard call up is invalid- they can be held personally responsible.

Guard Members ordered to duty were not properly activated-

The Governor's office states the call into Federal service of members of the State's National Guard was not issued through the State's Governor -- as required by federal law -- nor was it transmitted to, nor approved or ordered by.

"Orders for these purposes shall be issued through the governors of the States" -10 U.S.C. 12406, National Guard in Federal service: call https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?req=granuleid:USC-prelim-title10-section12406&num=0&edition=prelim

https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/06/department-of-defense-security-for-the-protection-of-department-of-homeland-security-functions/

Basically that means they aren’t properly activated, and , if anything happens, they may be held personally responsible- as their normal governmental immunity is now in question. Those Guard are not properly activated. They should stand down and be sent home. They are not there properly.

The Posse Comitatus Act applies

The Posse Comitatus Act is a U.S. federal law that limits the use of federal military personnel for domestic law enforcement. Passed in 1878, it prohibits using the Army or Air Force (and, more recently, the Navy, Marine Corps, and Space Force) as a posse comitatus or to execute the laws, unless specifically authorized by the Constitution or an Act of Congress.

Key aspects of the Posse Comitatus Act:

Purpose:
The Act was enacted to prevent the federal military from being used to enforce laws or suppress dissent within the United States, particularly in the aftermath of the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Restrictions:
It generally prevents federal troops from participating in civilian law enforcement activities, such as searches, seizures, arrests, or similar activities.

Exceptions:
The Act does allow for certain exceptions where military personnel can be used in domestic law enforcement, such as in cases of domestic violence, protection of federal property, or enforcement of some federal laws and court orders.

Scope:
While the original Act primarily focused on the Army and Air Force, it has been amended to include the Navy, Marine Corps, and Space Force.

National Guard:
The Act's restrictions do not apply to the National Guard when activated by a state's governor under Title 32 of the US Code (State service) . It DOES apply once state Guard troops are federalized under Title 10.
