US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says India and Pakistan "have agreed to an immediate ceasefire

Source: The Guardian

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says India and Pakistan “have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site”.

In a post on X, he said:

Over the past 48 hours, VP (JD) Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.

I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site.

We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.

Conspiracy of Silence: How Trump is Covertly Strangling Billions in Disease Cure Research

https://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/conspiracy-of-silence-how-trump-is-covertly-strangling-billions-in-disease-cure-research/sharetoken/e5b50bec-59c0-4124-9667-fb28a73e3127

The following is very important news about the Trump White House’s unfolding war against biomedical/disease-cure research in the United States. But the set up is a bit complicated. So I want to flag both the complexity and the importance in advance. Because I want to really encourage you to read the set up and the details. It’s important stuff and most of it remains unknown to the public, though a few threads of the story have been published.

Back in late March and early April the Trump administration announced grant freezes against a series of elite private universities, all notionally tied to charges of lax vigilance against anti-Semitism. The targeted universities eventually included Brown, Columbia, Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, Cornell and Northwestern. Harvard eventually sued the administration. Princeton has decided to fight the cuts but hasn’t sued. But most of the universities have generally kept quiet about what they’re doing. And in most cases what that means is that they’re negotiating with the administration and trying to keep quiet and keep their faculties quiet to avoid antagonizing the administration during those notional negotiations.

The dollar figures at different universities were all into the hundreds of millions of dollars and in some cases well over a billion dollars. I thought these cuts were cuts. I thought they’d all gone into effect. But that’s not quite right. I’ve gotten some visibility into the situation at Northwestern where the administration has been very much in the “let’s be nice and keep quiet and negotiate and hope for the best” camp. I have confirmed the following with my own sources. But the outlines are contained by a story by Jerry Wu, the Managing Editor of the Daily Northwestern, the student paper, published yesterday.

Here’s the deal: Soon after the White House announced the grant freezes Northwestern received ‘stop-work’ orders for a range of mostly Pentagon contracts. That’s by the book. The government agency is the customer or funder. So they send a message saying discontinue work and then they stop sending payments. That’s how the federal government shuts down a research projects. But that didn’t happen with the National Institutes of Health grants. The stop work orders never came. The University didn’t know and wasn’t able to find out what that meant so they continued negotiating and did something between assuming and hoping that the money would continue to flow. After all the NIH grants never received stop work orders. And in the world of law and contracts that means the money has to keep flowing.

But it didn’t continue to flow.

(snip)

This is how the Trump White House is currently strangling billions in cancer, Alzheimers and other disease and cure research in real time while mostly managing to do it with near perfect radio silence.

Basically many major universities are completely cut off from their research grants and are not talking about it publicly because they are in negotiations with this insane administration and want to keep some sort of good graces.

IT'S FREAKING OUTRAGEOUS!!!

Do Republicans know that EVERYTHING they are doing is the opposite of pro-life?

Even assuming they are pro-life only for white people, what they are doing is not even helping white people (even if maybe it is hurting POC more).

Overall, everything this government is doing is pro-death on every level-- most notably on messing up social security and medicaid, gutting public health and promoting more pollution and greenhouse gas production.

It's just evil.

What the hell is their rationalization? Especially since most of them call themselves Christians!

Is Martial Law coming on April 20th? Be warned.

I wish I could laugh this off but it seems way too likely.

It sounds wild. Maybe even crazy. But every step is already in motion. I’d be happy to be wrong. But if this is correct… you’ll be ready.
On April 20, 2025, the United States may initiate its final steps into authoritarian rule.

That’s the day Donald Trump’s advisory committee is expected to release its findings on whether he should invoke the Insurrection Act — a move that would allow him to deploy the military domestically and allow Trump to impose martial law. (San Francisco Chronicle). Given Hegseth and Noem are the main “advisors”, the conclusion is foregone.

And as his two months in office has already shown, he won’t stop at just a legal opinion.

Expect an executive order even that same day or the next, officially declaring the Insurrection Act, restricting freedoms in the name of restoring control of the border and perhaps in blue-state cities, and setting the larger plan in motion.

Of course, this won’t be framed as an attack on democracy. It will be packaged as a necessary response to crisis — as authoritarian takeovers always are.

But once it happens, there’s no going back.

This will be the point of no return.

The roadmap for overthrowing a democratic government isn’t new or theoretical — it’s a well-worn playbook, tested and repeated across history by those who crave power more than liberty. After rejecting it initially, being incredulous, I have realized there is too much evidence suggesting this may be what’s happening now to remain silent.

Telling other people what may be happening, so they can recognize it and maybe together we can stop it, is my entire purpose here.

"Trump Wants to Merge Government Data. Here Are 314 Things It Might Know About You."

Well this is terrifying

These intimate details about the personal lives of people who live in the United States are held in disconnected data systems across the federal government — some at the Treasury, some at the Social Security Administration and some at the Department of Education, among other agencies.

The Trump administration is now trying to connect the dots of that disparate information. Last month, President Trump signed an executive order calling for the “consolidation” of these segregated records, raising the prospect of creating a kind of data trove about Americans that the government has never had before, and that members of the president’s own party have historically opposed.

The effort is being driven by Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, and his lieutenants with the Department of Government Efficiency, who have sought access to dozens of databases as they have swept through agencies across the federal government. Along the way, they have elbowed past the objections of career staff, data security protocols, national security experts and legal privacy protections.

So far, the Musk group’s success has varied by agency and sometimes by the day, as differing rulings have come down from federal judges hearing more than a dozen lawsuits challenging the moves. The group has been temporarily blocked from sensitive data at several agencies, including the Social Security Administration. But on Monday, an appeals court reversed a preliminary injunction barring the group’s access at the Treasury, the Department of Education and the Office of Personnel Management.

I don't know if the Dem party can do anything about this but I know one thing that turns voters off is the endless texts

asking for donations.

They are so tiresome, especially around monthly and quarterly deadlines.

Problem is a lot of these texts quote Dems or are masquerading as directly from Dems when they are from Super Pacs, and they are so freaking annoying, I know it turns people off.

I don't know if the DNC can do anything about independent Super Pacs, but I'm sure most people don't know these texts are often NOT directly from the Dem party!

But also the party needs a better texting strategy.

Here's a couple I just got:

"Goodbye, Social Security.

We're begging now... If you care even a little bit, rush $9 to save Social Security >> go.democracyfirstpac.org/033134

DF
Stop2End"

Ones like these are very obnoxious

&quot my name), we need $6K TODAY to fully match Elon's texting campaign to reach FL special election voters. 🚨

Polling shows the Democratic candidate is in the lead in FL-06, but early voting turnout still has Republicans ahead. Everything comes down to turnout tomorrow on election day.

When Elon dropped $20,488.90 to prop up his MAGA bootlickers, we launched our counterstrike. Our precision-targeted persuasion texts are firing out NOW.

It's time for us to leave it all on the field. Chip in whatever you can and let's finish the job: turnleftpac.us/final-push?t=TCDkoy

Of course, I also get texts from the Dem Governors Association, the Dem Senate Campaign Committee and various candidates.

And this is on top of these endless emails.

But the texts seems more invasive because they pop up along with personal messages from family and friends.

America is Trapped in a Burning Tesla (Surprise! The madman stuff wasn't an act)

https://paulkrugman.substack.com/p/america-is-trapped-in-a-burning-tesla

One thing that really struck me from Rattner’s piece — something I’ve heard from other sources — is that big businessmen think Elon Musk is doing a good job. I guess this is one of those cases where power and privilege make you blind to things that are obvious to everyone else.

What those of us not cocooned in our corner offices see is that Musk let a bunch of Dunning-Kruger kids — too incompetent to realize that they’re incompetent — loose on federal agencies, where they began firing workers without trying to understand what these workers do or why it might be important. These firings have been followed in several cases by desperate attempts to rehire the lost workers, who turn out to have been doing things like, um, securing the nation’s nuclear weapons.

Now, Musk’s DOGE claims that it has already saved taxpayers tens of billions of dollars, but it has provided no evidence to back those claims. Instead, last month it released what it called a “wall of receipts,” purportedly documenting some of the claimed savings. That document, however, turned out to be riddled with huge errors, including misreading an $8 million contract as $8 billion and counting the same canceled contract three times. Last week it released a revised, much smaller “wall” — but that version also turns out to be full of major errors, and DOGE has already retracted 5 of its 7 biggest claims about cost savings.

Imagine how a private business would react if it hired a supposed efficiency expert who quickly fired crucial employees while making grandiose claims about the money he’s saving, but kept releasing progress reports that were full of ludicrous errors. You wouldn’t keep him on; you’d have security escort him out of the building and immediately change all the locks. But Trump went out of his way to praise Musk, who is still wreaking havoc that goes beyond the immediate impact of the layoffs. Think about what his actions must be doing to the morale of those federal workers who remain.

Sooner or later, and probably sooner rather than later, important things are going to break.

Jim Stewartson on Why Elon Musk Is Worse than a Nazi

Jim Stewartson is a renowned counterinsurgency expert.

Food for thought:

--------------------------------------------
Musk Is Not Just a “Nazi”: Why It Matters.
It’s not name-calling. It’s not theoretical.

JIM STEWARTSON
MAR 17

I was asked in my weekly Zoom meeting to explain why it matters that Elon Musk is a “Nazi.” It was pointed out, correctly, that many people glaze over at the word — in much the same way that people glazed over at the word “Russia” for years. Many people are still left with the remnants of a long hoax portraying Musk as a “genius” and a “visionary” when he’s never invented anything but his own mythology. So, here’s my answer, as concisely as I can.

Elon Musk is not just a “Nazi.”

Elon Musk’s psychology is comparable to neo-Nazi mass murderers Anders Breivik, Brenton Tarrant, Patrick Crusius and Dylan Roof. He is a mentally ill, emotionally broken teenage boy committing mass violence in order to make the world safe for white people.

He won’t stop until millions are dead.

This isn’t name-calling, and it’s not theoretical. What he has already done with DOGE will kill countless people in countries we were helping with life-saving food and medicine. He didn’t do it to save money, he did it because he hates Black and brown people and he wants them to die, as fast as possible.

Elon Musk wants to destroy the social safety net in America so he can disempower and identify the ethnic groups he wants to imprison, enslave, and ultimately eliminate. He wants to incentivize white births because he’s terrified of being replaced himself, a condition he was born into as a son of apartheid South Africa. He’s fine with dismantling the health care system because the only people who will die from measles, in his mind, deserve it. It’s not just being a memelord, and it’s not just greed, it’s enacting national eugenics as policy.

Elon Musk was taught by his father that he is a special little boy born for greatness — destined to live out the dreams of great Nazi rocket scientists. And then his father abused and abandoned him, and married his half-sister. When Elon was required to go into the military, Errol Musk told his son to leave South Africa because he didn’t think Black people could run the government and was convinced everything would collapse. So, Elon went to Canada and quickly schemed his way into America with his father’s money.
His mother, Maye Musk, is a racist, detached sociopath who encouraged her son’s bullying, narcissism and megalomania and passed down her father’s imperial, technocratic dream of a North American Empire, his vicious racism and antisemitism, and his admiration for Adolf Hitler.

Elon Musk’s white supremacist upbringing, inherited wealth, and subsequent reliance on foreign governments and their proxies in America made him the perfect target for radicalization and usurpation. Seeing an opportunity to make his destiny come true, he made the decision in 2022 to “correct the course of civilization” by buying Twitter and systematically turning it into a full-throated Nazi indoctrination system, with no guardrails. And then he went into business with Vladimir Putin and the Saudis to buy the 2024 election.

He is fully committed to the destruction of western liberal democracy as a viable form of government because, as a psychopath, he cannot understand empathy, and finds the whole concept of human emotion, altruism and charity to be “inefficient” — and contrary to his desires to cleanse the world of those he finds unclean and unworthy. These are quintessential National Socialist “ideals”.

To obfuscate his genocidal desires, Musk has introduced concepts like “effective altruism” and “longtermism” which are how oligarchs say “I’m going to steal everything you own and spend it on things that I want, regardless of what you think and regardless who it hurts.” He obsessively promotes the concept of “suicidal empathy” to rationalize his own raging sadism.

The failure of the press and Silicon Valley to recognize his deeply homicidal worldview has led to monstrous, civilizational errors like giving an unaccountable racist foreigner the keys to our space program — after buying into his teenage science fiction fantasies of Mars that he lifted from Wernher von Braun, Hitler’s premier rocket scientist, who came to America during Operation Paperclip. It’s all a hoax to recreate humanity in his Musk’s own deviant image.

Elon Musk is a serial mass killer who is quite literally sitting on the floor of the West Wing with his gaming laptop hacking the US Government to make America more white, patriarchal and violent. He is a global security emergency who will absolutely try to use a nuclear weapon if he has the opportunity and feels that his power is being threatened. Every legal effort must be made to stop him. Right now.

Elon is not just a “Nazi”. As someone who has studied him for years, I promise you, if we let him, he will kill more people than the original did. That is why it matters.

The many unpopular things Trump is doing right now

An Ipsos poll last month found that Americans opposed “proposals to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education” about 2-to-1 — 63 percent to 32 percent.
(snip)
Many actions and proposals have polled remarkably poorly:

83 percent opposed Trump’s pardons of violent Jan. 6 defendants (Washington Post-Ipsos)
Around 70 percent of Americans opposed the administration’s move to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” (Ipsos and Marquette University Law School)
70 percent opposed dismantling the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Ipsos)
62 percent in one poll and 74 percent in another opposed Trump’s plan to take control of Gaza (Quinnipiac University and Ipsos)
67 percent opposed freezing funds for public health agencies (Ipsos)
As many as 65 percent opposed trying to take the Panama Canal (Marquette)
64 percent opposed his 25 percent tariffs on goods from Canada (Post-Ipsos)
60 percent in one poll and 64 percent in another opposed trying to make Canada the 51st state (Economist-YouGov and Reuters-Ipsos)
59 percent opposed his 25 percent tariffs on goods from Mexico (Post-Ipsos)
58 percent and 59 percent in two polls opposed dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development (Ipsos and Washington Post-Ipsos)
58 percent opposed laying off large numbers of government workers (Post-Ipsos)
