Cities around the world are sinking at 'worrying speed'

https://www.bbc.com/news/resources/idt-14d00552-9211-4dab-89d1-60e34e226e43

Twenty-two years ago, when Erna stood outside her house, “the windows were as high as my chest”. Now they’re knee-height.

As their home has sunk, she and her family have had to cope with frequent flooding. In the most extreme cases “we used canoes - the water kept coming in and swamped the ground floor”, she says.

Erna lives in the Indonesian capital Jakarta - one of the fastest-sinking cities in the world. Her home is in one of the worst-affected areas, the north of the city, and is now much lower than the road.

Does anyone actually know how this works?

Abrego Garcia.

Yes, he will get his day in court. And he will almost certainly be found guilty. And he will serve a (potentially very long) prison sentence in a federal prison (likely several). And there will be no paroles or probations, because as soon as he is released (assuming he does not die in prison), then ICE will execute his detainer and he will be deported. Again. Only it will go easier this time because he will have CIMTs (crimes involving moral turpitude) on his record -- felony convictions.

I guess the win is that he will be in an American prison and not a foreign prison.

The truth about life on other planets - and what it means for humans

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp8jwj90ejno

There are some scientific discoveries that do much more than advance our knowledge: they create a shift in our psyche as they show us the scale of the Universe and our place in it.

One such moment was when space craft sent back images of the Earth for the first time. Another is the discovery of life on another world, a moment that has inched a little closer today with the news that signs of a gas, which on Earth is produced by simple marine organisms, has been found on a planet called K2-18b.

Now, the prospect of really finding alien life - meaning we are not alone in the Universe - is not far away, according to the scientist leading the team that made the detection.

Soviet-era spacecraft 'likely' to have re-entered Earth's atmosphere

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cy9vz28nyedo

Part of a Soviet-era spacecraft is likely to have re-entered the Earth's atmosphere after being stuck in orbit for more than half a century, the European Space Agency said.

Kosmos 482, which launched in 1972 on a mission to Venus, never made it out of Earth's orbit and instead broke into four pieces that have been circling the planet for more than five decades.

The EU Space Surveillance and Tracking centre (SST) said one fragment - believed to be the lander - "most likely" re-entered the atmosphere at about 06:16 GMT (07:16 BST) on Saturday.

Cats distinguish owner's smell from stranger's, study finds

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvg5v11dv29o

Domestic cats can tell the difference between the smell of their owner and that of a stranger, a new study suggests.

The study by Tokyo University of Agriculture found cats spent significantly longer sniffing tubes containing the odours of unknown people compared to tubes containing their owner's smell.

This suggests cats can discriminate between familiar and unfamiliar humans based on their odour, the researchers say, but that it is unclear whether they can identify specific people.

In North Korea, your phone secretly takes screenshots every 5 minutes for government surveillance

https://www.techspot.com/news/108156-north-korean-smartphone-secretly-takes-screenshot-every-5.html

The big picture: A smartphone smuggled out of North Korea is offering a rare – and unsettling – glimpse into the extent of control Kim Jong Un's regime exerts over its citizens, down to the very words they type. While the device appears outwardly similar to any modern smartphone, its software reveals a far more oppressive reality.

The phone was featured in a BBC video, which showed it powering on with an animated North Korean flag waving across the screen. While the report did not specify the brand, the design and user interface closely resembled those of a Huawei or Honor device.

Very interesting video on culture

Still making my way through it, but fascinating. Describes a lot of how I feel, having come from "last century"

And no, its not just all video game stuff (most of which I don't really understand as I don't play them) but its more of an overall capture.
