In a statement Tuesday, committee ranking Democrat Robert Garcia of California expressed frustration, saying Bondi “continues to lead a White House coverup” and had ignored the law and a previous subpoena.

“Thanks to united Oversight Committee Democrats, along with the support of several Republicans, the Attorney General will now appear before our committee under oath. No more lies. No more distractions. We want the truth—and justice for the survivors,” Garcia said.

The earthquake occurred near the Septentrional–Oriente fault zone, a major earthquake-producing fault system in the northern Caribbean. The fault marks part of the boundary between the North American and Caribbean plates and runs from southeastern Cuba eastward along the northern side of Hispaniola, including Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Scientists describe the Septentrional fault as one of the region’s principal strike-slip faults, where blocks of the Earth’s crust slide past each other horizontally. USGS research has identified it as a likely source of large earthquakes in Hispaniola, and paleoseismic studies suggest some segments have gone hundreds of years without a ground-rupturing event.

The broader Septentrional–Oriente system has produced major earthquakes before, including a magnitude 7.7 event in 2020 between Cuba and Jamaica.

The US is no longer a democracy. One of the most credible global sources on the health of democratic nations now says this outright. The Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) Institute at Gothenburg University reaches the alarming conclusion in its annual report, that the US is hurtling towards autocracy at a faster rate than Hungary and Turkey.

“Our data on the USA goes back to 1789. What we’re seeing now is the most severe magnitude of democratic backsliding ever in the country,” says Staffan Lindberg, founder of the institute.

Since 2012, Lindberg has led his small group of researchers in Sweden to become the world’s leading source for analysis of the health of global democracy. In their latest report, published on Tuesday, they conclude that the US, for the first time in more than half a century, has lost its long-term status as a liberal democracy. The country is now going through a rapid process of what the report’s authors call “autocratisation”.

Gregory Bovino of the US border patrol, who was demoted in late January as the public face of the controversial and deadly immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, says he is retiring at the end of March.

Bovino announced his retirement in an interview with Breitbart on Monday, weeks after federal immigration agents fatally shot 37-year-old US citizens Alex Pretti and Renee Good to death in separate cases in January.
