President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military, government and infrastructure sites.

The Rise of the AI Censors

Last week, Oxford University’s Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism released its annual digital news report, which found that “for the first time, social media and video networks are, on average across the markets covered, more popular than both TV and owned news websites and apps as sources of news.” The analysis looked at news consumption patterns around the world. It found over three quarters of the population is watching online news videos each week and many people rely on it more than traditional television broadcasts.
It’s clear that online video, especially short-form clips, is crucial for reaching the public. That’s particularly true since traditional internet traffic is rapidly drying up for most media outlets. The sharp audience dropoff is largely attributable to an AI takeover at the world’s largest search engine.
In this landscape, video matters more than ever, particularly TikTok. The Reuters Institute report noted that TikTok and Instagram are “the fastest growing video-led networks” with the latter platform leading the way.
Given all of these trends, I have started trying to build up my own TikTok presence with an eye towards ultimately creating more official TPM content on the platform. I quickly found out that the influential app makes it almost impossible for small and independent creators to report or comment on current events. Based on my own experience, it seems far-right politics thrives on the platform while reporting on extremism is almost instantly shut down.
I began regularly trying to post videos about news, history, and culture last month. Some were quickly removed. .........................................

It was early June, and the Trump administration was planning an event at the Lincoln Memorial on June 12 to promote President Trump’s Ultimate Fighting Championship birthday celebration at the White House.
Dotted around the perimeter of the memorial’s Reflecting Pool were the nanobubblers, the temporary water-purification machines meant to keep the pool clear of algae. Encased in black fencing and powered by large generators, the machines were something of an eyesore.
Before the event, the National Park Service asked Greenwater Services, which won a $1.7 million no-bid contract to install the nanobubblers, to remove them, according to two people briefed on the decision. The people asked for anonymity because they feared retaliation from the administration. The Park Service did not provide a reason for the removal, but it coincided exactly with the promotional event, which drew crowds to the Reflecting Pool.
Photos from that evening showed the pool without the hoses or enormous machines working to keep the water clean. The water looked dark blue.................

The decision to remove the water-treatment systems, which has not previously been reported, was one of several missteps that have plagued Mr. Trump’s $16.4 million renovation of the Reflecting Pool. There have been no-bid contracts, peeling strips of waterproof coating in Mr. Trump’s handpicked shade of “American flag blue,” and even a dead duck floating in the water (though it is not clear if the renovation had anything to do with the duck’s demise)..........................

WASHINGTON – The Great American State Fair is underway at the National Mall to mark the United States' 250th birthday. But not everything is off to such a great start.
The event has quickly faced problems including power outages, melting ice cream – and a lack of representation from states that declined to send delegations.
While organizers assured visitors all parts of the nation would be represented, at least 10 states and territories refused to participate, with many citing the price tag to send staff to the 16-day event as their reason for opting out.
Booths for Connecticut, Oregon, Washington, Maine, Alaska, the U.S. Virgin Islands featured just backdrops and chairs or carpets...................
Though Massachusetts declined to send staff, Donna, 72, a retired teacher from Western Massachusetts who asked to only use her first name, decided to take matters into her own hands. She drove nine hours from her home, bringing cases of maple syrup and kids' coloring books from the Massachusetts Maple Producers Association to volunteer at her state's booth. She told USA TODAY she's the only volunteer from her state and is working from roughly 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. local time each day................................
