The death toll from devastating floods in the Texas Hill Country rose to 24 Friday night, officials said as a the search for more than 20 people missing from a girls summer camp continued through the night.
The water from the flooded Guadalupe River swept into Kerr County and other areas around 4 a.m. Friday after heavy rains overnight, authorities said. Bodies were reported to have been found in cars swept away from upstream.
Gov. Greg Abbott called it an “extraordinary catastrophe,” and said that search and rescue missions will continue through the night.
“They will continue in the darkness of night, they will be taking place when the sun rises in the morning. They will be non-stop,” Abbott said at a press conference Friday night.
The missing are from Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas. There were 750 children at the camp, and helicopters ferried campers to safety Friday. Texas Game Wardens said that evening that they were able to reach the camp with vehicles.................

French police have waded into shallow waters off a beach south of Boulogne and used knives to slash an inflatable small boat - packed with men, women and children - that was wallowing, dangerously, in the waves.
All those onboard clambered to safety as the boat collapsed in chaotic scenes.
The intervention was highly unusual.
French police usually follow strict rules that bar them from going into the sea in case they put lives at risk.
"Let's go in," said one of the gendarmes, pulling off his body armour, and taking out a small knife. His colleagues took their heavy armour off, too, placing equipment in the back of a nearby police car before rushing into the water.......................

Dutch artist Judith de Leeuw told Storyful it's meant to reflect shame for the United States' current immigration policies.
...........The values that the statue once stood for—freedom, hope, the right to be yourself—have been lost for many,” she said. De Leeuw added that the mural took six days to complete, and called the date of its unveiling – right before the July 4 Independence Day holiday – a “meaningful coincidence.” Although she was nervous that the message was too controversial, she said locals embraced the message given the harsh realities of immigration in France.

A mural of the Statue of Liberty covering her face in shame was unveiled in Roubaix, France, one day before the United States celebrates Independence Day on July 4. The mural, titled “The Statue of Liberty’s Silent Protest,” was created by Dutch artist Judith de Leeuw, who painted the it over six days a building on Rue de Chemin-de-Fer. de Leeuw said the city of Roubaix "has a large migrant population, and many of them live in extremely difficult circumstances."
"The values that the statue once stood for—freedom, hope, the right to be yourself—have been lost for many,” she said.
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the U.S. and stands on Liberty Island in New York – nearby Ellis Island, which was a stop for immigrants making their way to New York in 19th and 20th centuries. Both make up a National Park.

.............. In recent weeks, Russia has launched near-nightly air attacks on Ukraine involving hundreds of missiles and drones. Earlier this week Ukraine’s foreign minister said that in June alone, Russia launched over 330 missiles, including nearly 80 ballistic missiles, 5,000 combat drones, and 5,000 gliding bombs against Ukraine.
Before Friday, the last record-setting night of attacks came just five days ago – when Russia fired 537 drones and missiles at Ukraine.
On Thursday, Trump held a nearly hour-long call with Putin and voiced frustration afterward about the stalled ceasefire negotiations.
“We had a call. It was a pretty long call. We talked about a lot of things, including Iran and we also talked about, as you know, the war with Ukraine,” Trump said. “I’m not happy about that.” .........................................................
