Biden to award Liz Cheney and others with Presidential Citizens Medal

Source: Denver Gazette

(Reuters) - Former Representative Liz Cheney, who bucked her Republican Party as a strong critic of President-elect Donald Trump and some of his allies, will be one of the 20 people awarded by President Joe Biden on Thursday with the Presidential Citizens Medal, one of the country's highest civilian honors.

The medal is awarded to U.S. citizens who have “performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens,” the White House said in announcing the recipients.
.....................

Cheney, a one-time Republican member of Congress, served as vice chair of the House of Representatives select committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters. In October, she urged Americans to reject Trump's “depraved cruelty” as she rallied alongside Democratic White House candidate Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of the presidential election.

.................

Congressman Bennie G. Thompson, a Democrat from Mississippi who served as the chairman of the Jan. 6 House select committee, will also be awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal.

Other honorees include attorney Mary Bonauto, who fought to legalize same-sex marriage and argued before the Supreme Court in the landmark marriage-equality case Obergefell v. Hodges, and lawyer and activist Evan Wolfson, a leader of the marriage-equality movement.................

BREAKING: Mass shooting in Queens leaves at least 10 people injured

Source: amny.com

By Dean Moses and Robert Pozarycki Posted on January 2, 2025

Police in Queens are investigating a reported mass shooting at a nightclub on Wednesday that has left at least 10 people wounded.

Law enforcement sources said the gunfire erupted near the Amazura event hall at 91-12 144th Place in Jamaica, within the confines of the 103rd Precinct, at about 11:20 p.m. on Jan. 1.

Sources familiar with the investigation said that the hall hosted a private party at the time of the shooting. The event apparently was in honor of a known gang member in the community slain last October whose birthday coincided with New Year’s Day.

As about 80 people gathered in front of Amazura waiting to get in Wednesday night, law enforcement sources said, two to three suspects walking eastbound along 144th Place approached and began firing indiscriminately at the crowd.............

Driver in fatal New Orleans truck ramming may not have acted alone, had ISIS flag

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) -A U.S. Army veteran with an ISIS flag on his truck swerved around makeshift barriers and plowed into New Orleans' crowded French Quarter on New Year's Day, killing at least 10 people, and police were searching for others who may have been involved in placing explosive devices in the area.

Some 35 people were injured in the attack at 3:15 a.m. (0915 GMT), near the intersection of Canal and Bourbon Streets, a historic tourist destination known for its music and bars where crowds were celebrating the new year. After ramming the crowd with his pickup truck, the driver was shot dead in a gunfight with police, officials said.

Police identified the suspect as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, a U.S. citizen from Texas. Officials said the death toll could rise as some of those injured were in critical condition.

Surveillance video captured three men and a woman placing an improvised explosive device in the French Quarter, the Associated Press reported, citing a Louisiana State Police intelligence bulletin.

That same bulletin said the devices were concealed within coolers and wired for remote detonation, and that a remote control was found in the suspect vehicle, the AP reported................................

Elon Musk brought four toddlers to the NYE party at Mar-a-Lago.

Well, in my humble opine--a New Years Eve bash is not a place for toddlers.

Looks like Trump did shake Musks hand but also ignored the kid.

The First Ever Times Square Ball Drop Was Held Atop the New York Times Headquarters in 1907, Starting a Cherished Tradition

Time balls date back to the early 19th century, when they signaled the time to passing sailors. Now they’re part of the pomp and circumstance of the new year

Crowds gather for New Year's Eve in 1938
By the time this crowd gathered on New Year's Eve, 1938, the Times Square ball drop had been an annual rite for decades Bettman / Getty Images

One Times Square, the billboard-covered building at the intersection of Broadway, Seventh Avenue and 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan, is the definitive place where one year passes into the next.

Each year, thousands of people pack around the building to watch the Times Square ball slowly descend a pole marking the New Year—a beloved tradition that began on this day in 1907. Viewers, including almost a billion watching on television, witness a glittering spectacle, sponsored by companies angling to cash in on New Year’s resolutions.

The fanfare in Times Square began 120 years ago. Adolph Simon Ochs, the publisher and owner of the New York Times, wanted to increase publicity for his paper’s new headquarters at One Times Square. So, as 1904 passed into 1905, workers launched a pyrotechnic show from the building.

“From base to dome,” the Times wrote, “the giant structure was alight—a torch to usher in the new born, a funeral pyre for the old which pierced the very heavens.”

The fireworks only lasted two more years. In 1907, Ochs hired sign maker and advertiser Artkraft Strauss to build an iron and wood ball weighing 700 pounds, five feet in diameter and covered in 100 lightbulbs..............................

Burchett on Trump backing Johnson: 'The die has been cast'....

Repugs are afraid of trump--so they will bow to his whims.

Burchett on Trump backing Johnson: ‘The die has been cast’

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) argued that the “die has been cast” in the Speakership vote after President-elect Trump gave an endorsement of sitting Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).

Burchett joined Fox News on Monday, saying he believes Johnson will have enough votes to remain speaker.

“I think he ultimately will,” he said. “I think the die has been cast pretty much.”

Still, Burchett didn’t jump on board for Johnson. He said he would wait and make up his mind on Friday.

“I’ll talk to Mike some and maybe President Trump even, and discuss some ideas and issues that I have,” Burchett said.

The House is set to vote Friday on a new Speaker. Johnson’s leadership position hangs in the balance, as some hard-line conservatives are upset with his spending after the continuing resolution legislation and aid to Ukraine.
